From the May 2004 American Speaker issue:

Seasonal Sayings

Sunday, May 9: Mother’s Day
“God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers.”
— Yiddish Proverb

Monday, May 31: Memorial Day
(In 1868, retired Gen. John A. Logan, head of the Grand Army of the Republic—a nationally organized group of Union Army veterans of the Civil War—issued an order designating this day as one on which the graves of soldiers would be decorated. For this reason it was also known for many years as “Decoration Day.” Originally dedicated to the Civil War dead alone, it now embraces Americans fallen from all wars.)
