1 - On this day in 1898, U.S. Admiral George Dewey destroyed the Spanish Fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay, one of the decisive actions in the Spanish-American War.

June
1 - On this day in 1958, World War II hero Charles DeGaulle became premier of France. He created a new constitution, became president of a new (“fifth”) Republic and restored France’s place as a major European power.
