1 - On this day, 145 years ago, President Lincoln appointed a short, quarrelsome young drillmaster to be General-in-Chief of the Union Armies. His name was George McClellan, and while he proved to be a timid field commander, his intensive training of the Army of the Potomac turned it into a crack fighting force.
