Seasonal Sayings

Thursday, November 23rd: Thanksgiving Day
(See this issue’s Instant Speeches section.)

Saturday, December 16th: First Day of Hanukkah
Hanukkah is the eight-day-long Jewish “Festival of Dedication,” also called the “Festival of Lights.” It commemorates the victory of the ancient Jewish Maccabees over their Syrian oppressors in 167 B.C. — a notable triumph in the ages-old Jewish struggle against annihilation and for religious freedom. For many American Jewish families, it has also become a time for exchanging gifts among loved ones.

Friday, December 22nd: Beginning of Winter
“The days are short,/The sun a spark, Hung thin between/The dark and dark.

Monday, December 25th: Christmas Day
(For Christmas quotes, see this issue’s Instant Speeches section.)
