1 - On this day, 145 years ago, Julia Ward Howe’s poem “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” was first published in Atlantic Monthly magazine. Its rousing words inspired Union soldiers during the Civil War and, more recently, touched Americans watching the memorial service held at Washington’s National Cathedral for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
