From the September/October 2003 American Speaker issue:

Instant Speeches

Christopher Columbus, navigator and motivator
If ever a man had to master the art of the motivational speech, it was Christopher Columbus! He had to overcome the ignorance and prejudice of centuries, selling a bold, new idea. And he also had to convince two tight-fisted, war-weary royals, Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, that at the end of a long and costly war to drive the Moors out of the Iberian Peninsula, they should invest their limited resources in a journey to the unknown.

Columbus: Symbol of perserverance
Around this time of year, Americans are reminded of the man who discovered their land. Congress established a national holiday, Oct. 12, to honor Christopher Columbus. But this holiday isn’t so much a tribute to Columbus as it is a recognition of a seminal event that changed the course of world history.
