From the May 2008 American Speaker issue:

Seasonal Sayings

Sunday, May 11: Mother’s Day
“Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother.”

Saturday, May 17: U.S. Armed Forces Day
“Courage is the price that Life exacts for granting peace.”

Monday, May 19: Victoria Day (Canada)
The late Robertson Davies, perhaps Canada’s greatest 20th-century man of letters, was awarded the Medal of Honor for Literature by the National Arts Club in New York on Feb. 14, 1987. As the first Canadian to receive the award, Davies took advantage of his acceptance speech to try to explain some of the historical and cultural differences that make Americans American and Canadians Canadian.

Monday, May 26: Memorial Day
In 1868, retired Gen. John A. Logan, head of the Grand Army of the Republic, a nationally organized group of Union Civil War veterans, issued an order designating this day as one on which the graves of soldiers would be decorated. Originally dedicated to the Civil War dead alone, it now embraces Americans fallen in all our wars.
