Monday, May 26: Memorial Day
In 1868, retired Gen. John A. Logan, head of the Grand Army of the Republic, a nationally organized group of Union Civil War veterans, issued an order designating this day as one on which the graves of soldiers would be decorated. Originally dedicated to the Civil War dead alone, it now embraces Americans fallen in all our wars.
